Measuring 3.4 inches by 2.2 inches high at 0.7 inch deep the camera weighs very little at 4.7 ounces. It offers a 2.5 inch LCD viewfinder.

Specifications: The camera features a 12.1MP 1/2.3 inch CCD sensor with a 3x optical zoom lens running at f3.2-5.8. With the lens at 33-100mm it is a bit wider angle than most, making it ideal for group shots. Its continuous shooting mode was also rather slow at 0.8 frames per second. However, image quality more than made up for it with accurate colors and good clarity below ISO 200.

Overall, the Canon PowerShot SD780IS delivers great images and 720p HD movies in an extremely ultra-compact package making it ideal for the handbag or pouch. While its grip is quite comfortable, the flat controls make it a bit more suitable for those with slim fingers while the extra feature-set should appeal to everyone.

The reason why I initially wanted to review this camera is because of the small size, it is possibly the smallest digital camera that I have ever seen. Sometimes small can be excellent however if you have big hands like I do then it could be a problem, however because of the simple layout of the SD780IS this wasn't a problem. There was nothing too fiddly about the design which made it easy for me to access all of the features on the camera, even with my big hands.

The camera has a 3 times optical zoom which is excellent for taking pictures of friends at the beach or at a nightclub or any other every day occasion really. This camera also offers the option to record high definition video which is excellent for capturing those special moments.

The Canon PowerShot SD780IS has built in image stabilisation which keeps your images sharp even for those people who haven't got the steadiest of hands. The camera also features an impressive 12megapixel cmos sensor which means that by using this camera you will have more megapixels than entry level professional DSLR cameras. One downside to this is that you will need a larger memory card simply because your images will be so big and of high quality.

For such a small price this small little camera could possibly be the best camera that I have tested this year. The little camera is small enough to fit in any of my pockets without being obtrusive. If you're looking for the cheapest digital camera that produces excellent images then I highly recommend the Canon PowerShot SD780IS.

Most of you reader probably know by now that I'm a big fan of DSLR cameras, but I also think that point and shoot cameras have their place among us especially in situations where a DSLR camera wouldn't be suitable, for this reason I'm often purchasing point and shoot digital cameras, here is my review of the Canon PowerShot SD780IS.

The first thing you notice when you pull the PowerShot out of the box is that it is really small, in fact it is probably the smallest digital camera that I have ever used. The shooting settings on the SD780 are very simple and there is not much to fiddle around with which is an excellent feature for someone just looking to snap some pictures, having said that if you do want to get a little more creative there are options such as flash override, AE lock, AF lock, and exposure compensation which you can play around with to get the image you want.

The camera has a 3x optical zoom which isn't massive but isn't small either and poses no problems when trying to take pictures of your mates at clubs, at the beach or for any other general every day situation. An added bonus of this camera is that it is able to shoot at 720p HD, it is worth mentioning that this isn't full HD but most digital cameras use 720p as a standard, but you shouldn't worry too much about this because 720p will shoot movies crisp enough to watch on your big flat screen television.

It is worth mentioning that if you do purchase this camera then you will need at least a 4GB memory card because of this cameras 12 megapixel sensor, which tends to eat a lot of the memory up, however the upside of this is clear and crisp images which you can enlarge to pretty much any size you want without losing image quality.

Conclusion

Overall I'm very happy with the Canon PowerShot SD780IS and I don't even leave the house without it and that's a testament to what a great little camera this is especially when I always use my Canon 7D DSLR camera. The camera also performs well in lowlight conditions and even when you have to crank the ISO up to 1600 the images are still very crisp and very usable. If you're looking for a small digital camera with big results look no further than the Canon PowerShot SD780IS.
