The first digital camera (and still is the only one so far) that I ever bought with my own money is the Canon Ixus i7 model. I had wanted to get a unit in the color blue, but the saleslady said it was no longer in stock, so I had to settle for the remaining variant: hot pink.

After a demonstration by the salesclerk, I was able to test it at the store. However, I realized that I will not be able to test all the functions at that short period, so after a few test shots I decided to purchase the unit and rely at the mercy of a money-back guarantee.

Upon getting home, I immediately opened the package and read carefully all the manuals that came along with the unit. Then I proceeded to test the camera, frequently checking on the users guide provided. I used all the camera's available features, including the video function, and decided that I actually liked the unit. It's been three years now since I purchased it, and the Canon Ixus i7 has been with me in all the family gatherings and company outings that I've been to.

Sleek, stylish and compact, it's a camera that I can take with me on almost anywhere. What I like about the Canon Ixus i7 is that it has all the available shooting modes that one could possibly imagine, even underwater. Unfortunately for this mode, however, a special water-proof camera case is required, and said accessory is not provided in the package.

Still, the picture clarity makes up for that; I can actually use it for a little macro-photography on my mother's orchid plants and the ants that crawl on them, and the resulting images appear vivid and vibrantly colored. And with the built-in flash, I can take nighttime pictures in an instant, with the exception of fireworks displays which should always be taken without the flash. It can also be used to capture images of people or objects in motion, which could or could not be considered as a plus.

Whenever I do this (without the flash), I notice that when the people or objects move too fast, the images turn out blurry. To offset the blur, I tried using the flash, but often end up with very dark images like the ones I got when I took pictures of an indoor basketball game. I have yet to discover the exact user-defined shooting mode (light sensitivity included) that would enable me to shoot such scenes and come up with near-perfect images. Other features worth mentioning: option to set manual shooting according to lighting conditions (e.g., tungsten, daylight, fluorescent) and settings for resulting image color (e.g., vivid, lighter skin tone, sepia, black-and-white).

As for the video recording option, one can record as much video as the memory card can hold, which could be up to a maximum of 4GB memory. Special attention should be noted here, as I have discovered a year ago that Ixus i7 can only support that capacity for memory cards without going into some sort of retrograde fit. At 4GB alone, shifting between images and/or video recordings takes a longer time in playback mode, so it's wise to keep to that limit. Video lengths, on the other hand, depend on the recording mode that is used; resulting quality of recordings, however, may also be affected by the recording mode used.

All in all, I can say that for a point-and-shoot camera, Canon Ixus i7 is actually a good buy; it is good enough for such needs as family occasions and out-of-town trips. The model comes with 7.1MP and 2.4x optical zoom (which can be expanded digitally further to 4x).

Canon Sd780is Review - Best Compact Camera

I did not realize until I received the Canon Sd780is just how small it was. It is actually a little smaller than a deck of cards. I wanted to get a small camera so I would not have to pack around my big camcorder or my DSLR. I like this little camera because I can just drop it in my shirt pocket and go everywhere with it. I am always taking pictures and video of my daughter with it.

I could not have asked for a more high quality compact digital camera. For the purpose of this review I would like to point out that this camera is a 12 MP and will shoot at 2592 x 1944 and can go up to 4000 x 3000 and also 4000 x 2248 for even wider shots. The quality of the photos are very close to my Panasonic FZ-28 which shoots at 720p high definition but of course is a much larger camera. I can take over 2600 photos before I empty it although I never do.

I also like the fact that I can zoom with this camera while recording video. I can watch the videos on my 52" Toshiba HDTV. The only thing is I have to be very slow with my movements while recording video or it will blur but other than that I get very crisp clear, and colorful videos. It also has a tripod mount and I use it sometimes to help keep a steady video shot. There is built in Digic IV Processor and iSaps technology that will automatically calculate the the light in the room and it will adjust automatically.

The 3x zoom is not a whole lot but I found it to be sufficient in all most of my shooting situation.

The viewfinder is small but it comes in handy in bright sunlight when you cant see the LCD screen and not to mention most of the current point and shoot digital cameras do not even come with a viewfinder but this one does.

I would suggest getting a 16GB and an extra battery because when you are shooting video it will eat your battery up pretty quick.

I also love the fact that this Canon sd780is has the ability to choose to shoot in auto mode or I can go into the program settings and change the ISO and the white balance. I change these sometimes when shooting in low light because I do not like the results of photo taken with a point and shoot camera with the flash on. So I will set the ISO to 400 and white balance to tungsten and the shots come out with very nice colors clear and crisp. I have taken shots with this camera on this setting in absolutely very little and low light and I get beautiful pictures with it.

I love that it is so small it fits in a pocket ready to pull out at a moments notice to capture the precious moments pics at the right time. I highly recommend this little Canon sd780is review camera to anyone no matter what your level of photography experience may be.

Canon IXUS 95 IS Review

The Canon IXUS 95 IS is one of three new pocket cameras introduced by Canon in the spring of 2009. Looking through the features the three models offer there is not a great deal of difference to choose between them. The IXUS 95 IS is the cheapest of the three. The main reason for this is that it does not offer the High Definition movie mode that you will find on the other two models. If this is not important to you, you are likely to find this model offers a bit better value for money as other key factors such as features and picture quality are otherwise quite similar.

You should have no problem fitting the IXUS 95 IS into a pocket. When it comes to how the camera looks I would say it has a fairly standard design. Canon somehow manages to make their digital cameras that little bit classier than some other brands. This may be helped by the shiny, reflective area around the lens. I think this helps to make the camera look good, but can be a drawback if are taking photos of reflective objects. This camera comes in four different shades. These are silver, grey, blue and pink.

Another pleasant surprise was the turn on time. It took only just over a second to turn the IXUS 95 IS on and take the first shot. This outperforms all other digital cameras I have tested to date.

If you are looking round at other brands you may like to consider pocket cameras produced by Panasonic, Nikon and Sony. These can be, but not in all cases, a little cheaper than those made by Canon. It is true though that you get what you pay for and you will be hard pressed to beat the picture quality provided by the Canon IXUS 95 IS.

The reason why I initially wanted to review this camera is because of the small size, it is possibly the smallest digital camera that I have ever seen. Sometimes small can be excellent however if you have big hands like I do then it could be a problem, however because of the simple layout of the SD780IS this wasn't a problem. There was nothing too fiddly about the design which made it easy for me to access all of the features on the camera, even with my big hands.

The camera has a 3 times optical zoom which is excellent for taking pictures of friends at the beach or at a nightclub or any other every day occasion really. This camera also offers the option to record high definition video which is excellent for capturing those special moments.

The Canon PowerShot SD780IS has built in image stabilisation which keeps your images sharp even for those people who haven't got the steadiest of hands. The camera also features an impressive 12megapixel cmos sensor which means that by using this camera you will have more megapixels than entry level professional DSLR cameras. One downside to this is that you will need a larger memory card simply because your images will be so big and of high quality.

If you're looking for the cheapest digital camera that produces excellent images then I highly recommend the Canon PowerShot SD780IS.

The first thing you notice when you pull the PowerShot out of the box is that it is really small, in fact it is probably the smallest digital camera that I have ever used. The shooting settings on the SD780 are very simple and there is not much to fiddle around with which is an excellent feature for someone just looking to snap some pictures, having said that if you do want to get a little more creative there are options such as flash override, AE lock, AF lock, and exposure compensation which you can play around with to get the image you want.

It is worth mentioning that if you do purchase this camera then you will need at least a 4GB memory card because of this cameras 12 megapixel sensor, which tends to eat a lot of the memory up, however the upside of this is clear and crisp images which you can enlarge to pretty much any size you want without losing image quality.

Conclusion

Overall I'm very happy with the Canon PowerShot SD780IS and I don't even leave the house without it and that's a testament to what a great little camera this is especially when I always use my Canon 7D DSLR camera. The camera also performs well in lowlight conditions and even when you have to crank the ISO up to 1600 the images are still very crisp and very usable. If you're looking for a small digital camera with big results look no further than the Canon PowerShot SD780IS.
