How Do I Back Up My Computer?

How do I back up my computer? This is a very common question that most computer newbies ask at one point or another. It's also a very important question, since backing up your data is a very important habit to get into.

The hard drive, sometimes called Hard disc or Hard disc drive (HDD) is the device inside of your computer that stores all of your data. Your hard drive stores your operating system, your software applications and your personal files.

A few years ago mechanical drive failure was far more common that it is now. These days, complete failure due to mechanical reasons is far less frequent but still a real possibility.

More commonly in this day and age, drive failure is generally a result of a virus infecting the master boot record of a hard drive file system. If this master boot record does become infected, the Fdisk (fixed disc) facility would have to be run causing data to be lost or at the very least, costly to recover.

When it comes to recovering files, operating system failure or corrupt software installation can cause some files to be irretrievable. For this reason backing up your hard drive is an essential task. A hard disk back up is simply the process of creating a copy of the files that are stored on the hard drive. This enables you to have a spare copy of your files should your hard drive suffer a critical failure.

When it comes to backup you have various options at your disposal. External hard drives are reasonably cheap in this day and age, you could easily purchase an external drive and simply copy files across for your computer hard disk periodically. Alternatively there are various software solutions available that will simply the process and offer additional features.

The features of backup software include backing up both locally and remotely, encrypted back up, compression, multi-versioning, incremental back ups and more. With backup software on the low end of the price spectrum, these facilities alone make the software a worthwhile investment.

Overall it's incredibly important to maintain adequate backups of your information, especially when we invest so much money in our data. Some data, such as photographs, are priceless and not able to be replaced. I strongly suggest that people make backups on a consistent basis.
