Imagining is slightly different as the user will create a very large backed up file. This file can be later recreated at a later date when the user feels the need to recreate it. Imaging does allow the files to be restored on the same pc or on a different hard drive, depending on the needs of the user. Cloning requires the dedicated use of a hard drive, imaging however gives the user more media options. Unlike like cloning, imaging allows the user to place an image on another hard drive, CDs, or DVDs. The user thus has greater choices and much more options to choose from allowing certain data to be sent to a hard drive while other data may be sent to DVD format.

There are many imaging type backup software to pick from on the market. The different types of imaging software that exists allows the user to select the software that fits the individual's needs. For example many backup software programs that support incremental backups.

Incremental backups will copy only the files that were changed since the last backup. This form ensures that double entries are not copied, saving time and space.

Another benefit imaging has over cloning is that imaging is much more secure in regards to malware attacks. Should malware infect the pc, it can find two partitions and thus infect both of them. The compressed file has a better chance of escaping such attacks.
